Moffett Field, CA - Amoroso Construction joined NASA February 5 as they celebrated the opening of their newest facility at the NASA Ames Research Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The NASA Ames Biosciences Research Facility, built by Amoroso and designed by AECOM, will be used to study the impacts of spending long periods of time in space on the human body. Among this research, the laboratory will seek to understand how low or no gravity can decrease bone density and how space radiation impacts the body and its cells.

In addition, the scientists at NASA Ames will study what extreme conditions a microorganism can survive in, the best techniques astronauts and researchers can use to find evidence of life on other planets, and will work with engineers to build sample collection devices and tools that astronauts can use comfortably in space.

The opening of this building comes at a perfect time, as Astronaut Christina Koch landed back on earth February 6 after a record-setting 11 months in space – the longest single flight by a female.

With more research from NASA Ames Biosciences Facility, Astronauts like Koch can begin to better understand how these trips affect them and better prepare for their next mission.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, NASA officials spoke about the excitement of having a new, collaborative sciences building that's one of only a few of its kind in the whole NASA program. The NASA team also expressed how vital this building is to the research center as it will host many bioscience disciplines in one space with scientists under one roof who had previously been spread across the campus. With this facility, sciences will be able to work together in an open lab to improve the process of their studies of life in deep space.

The Amoroso Construction project team and others were then able to tour the building with the NASA team to learn more about what the building will be used for.

From starting with a blank slate, to handing over the completed facility, the Amoroso project team can see how their hard work will impact future space research and will leave a mark on the world long after they leave the jobsite.

The NASA's Ames Research Center is one of ten field centers and was created in 1939 – the same year Amoroso Construction was founded! – to conduct world-class research and development in aeronautics, exploration technology and science. The center is located in Mountain View, Calif., at the heart of Silicon Valley.

The NASA Ames Biosciences Facility project was run by Project Managers, Jennifer Erskine and Michael Montano, Project Engineer, Zach Ervin and Superintendents Mike Brostko and Nicholas Sifuentes. The 40,000 sq.-ft. project is seeking LEED Silver certification.
