The City of San Francisco's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division's emergency response capabilities got a big boost with the completion of their new EMS Station No. 49, part of San Francisco's Fire Department, in Bayview.  Mayor London Breed and other city officials estimate that the enhanced facility will allow the first responders in the EMS Division, whom they estimate respond to an average of 250 calls for emergency and health crises per day, to meet the increasing need for their services in the city.

Construction on the project, known as the San Francisco Ambulance Deployment Facility (ADF), broke ground October 29, 2018, and recently reached substantial completion in May 2021.  Amoroso Construction served as the General Contractor on the project, building the innovative design of Architect MEI/Murjan, A Joint Venture.

Expertly coordinated by Amoroso's Northern California office, including Sr. Project Manager Dean Ramsey, Project Manager Randy McManus, Superintendent Tim Corbin, and Project Engineer Andrei Matus-McDonald, the completed $32.6 million construction project has been recognized for its critical importance to the city and the community, providing the crucial storage space for the Division's supplies and ambulance fleet.

The quality of the work of Amoroso's team has been lauded by city officials, including Acting Public Works Director Alaric Degrafinreid, "…Public Works is proud to deliver another world-class project that will serve San Franciscans for generations to come.  We take great pride in partnering with skilled contractors and other City agencies to provide capital infrastructure projects to serve the critical needs of our diverse communities".

Amoroso Construction is also proud of our team's work on the more than 58,000 SF four-story ADF, a steel frame structure, which they built from the ground up.  The facility is specially designed for seismic safety, with the ability to withstand a major earthquake or other natural disaster.  The design also featured state-of-the-art sustainability features and the project is seeking a coveted LEED Gold rating from the United States Green Building Commission (USGBC).

The scope of work for the facility included a parking garage for the Division's fleet of ambulances, supply storage space, EMS offices, conference and training rooms, locker rooms, and communal space.  It also included a fueling station, an emergency 72-hour generator, and solar panels. The entry gates to the ADF will showcase art by a prominent local artist that honors the community and the history of San Francisco's first responders.  The parking garage, located on the lower floors, and the administrative, preparation, and training functions on the upper floors are separated by a ribbon of glass.  The project also involved associated site work.

A proud member of the Bay Area building community, Amoroso Construction is honored to have been selected to lead this important emergency response infrastructure project.  Not only does it benefit the community by optimizing emergency response capabilities, but the project also added 77 jobs to the local economy, resulting in 100,000 working hours.  We look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of the Bay Area and California as a whole, as we have for more than 80 years.
