East Contra Costa BART Extension Project Underway

January 22, 2016

Amoroso and JV partner began construction of the East Contra Costa BART Extension Project in August 2014. This 10-mile rail extension from the Pittsburg-Bay Point BART station to Antioch is set to open in Spring 2018. BART estimates the greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 260,000 lbs per day once completed and will reduce vehicle miles traveled by 99 million per year. The project will use independently propelled railcars know as Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs). The DMU train was chosen to bring BART-quality rail service to East County at a much lower cost than conventional BART.

"S. J. Amoroso worked hand in hand with Metro to truly form an excellent partnership and came up with creative ways to cut down the schedule and work on multiple stations concurrently. By carefully planning the work S. J. Amoroso was able to cut four months off the approved baseline schedule, reduce the impacts on our transit riders, and save Metro money in support costs… This project is viewed as an enormous success within Metro and will be looked at as an example for future projects on how to minimize the impacts to the public." Mat Antonelli, Director of Construction Management ~ Metro
