With over 28,000 American with Disabilities Act deficiencies, spanning eighty school sites, the LAUSD Modified Consent Decree projects were a huge win for Amoroso. Never before have we taken on  projects of such range under a design build partnership, incorporating the Construction Manager as part of the team.  Amoroso's intent from the beginning was not only obtain the Group A contract,  but the Group B contract as well.

Working with Architect Leo Daly and Construction Manager Cumming, our team has enhanced the value of this integrative delivery by working to deploy an innovative solution never before utilized by LAUSD under these circumstances. Traditionally these types of projects would be delivered through Job Order Contracts (JOCs). "JOCs are challenging and don't offer the District the greatest value. We saw an opportunity to offer a far superior solution," said Southern California Vice President of Amoroso, Brian DerMatoian.

With the LAUSD Modified Consent Decree projects come a great deal of risk. Precise coordination and communication with each individual campus' staff allows for a seamless transition without disrupting classes or endangering students. "The trust LAUSD has placed in us speaks highly to the confidence they have in our ability to safely and effectively complete such a task," says Brian, "With a restricted time frame of only nine months to complete these projects, it is imperative that the schedule is adhered to. The quality and commitment Amoroso shows on every job will open up more opportunities, allowing us to further delve into this niche we are creating."

These intensive projects will close out the ADA deficiencies within the multiple campuses, allowing LAUSD to comply with the requirements set forth in the Modified Consent Decree conforming to the Americans with Disabilities Act. With nearly 80 new employees hired for the projects thus far, growth opportunities are vast. Challenges come from this growth, as far as maintaining the award winning safety and quality Amoroso is known for, while employing a brand new group of team members. Communication is integral to the success of this project in every facet.

With this unique twist on traditional design build delivery firmly in place; Amoroso is in a position to take advantage of LAUSD's next phase of their building program, which will consist of multiple projects on multiple existing campuses bundled into one large project.  There are approximately 60 future projects worth roughly $100 million each.  We are also poised to align with additional school districts, offering a similar solution to that of the ADA Modified Consent Decree project, and diversifying services for growth within the future needs of the construction industry.
