Brian DerMatoian marked 30 years with Amoroso Construction on November 4, 2021.  Not one to toot his own horn, Brian does not often speak about his many accomplishments and roles in the company, so we decided to share them!

A proud and active alumnus, Brian graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.  A family affair, Brian's wife and children are also former and current Mustangs.  Though he will probably claim not to have favorites, it is known around the office that Brian appreciates his fellow Cal Poly SLO alumni (not to be confused with Cal Poly Pomona).

30 years ago, shortly after graduating and working a short stint at Webcor, Brian started his journey with Amoroso as a Project Engineer in the field in our Northern California region.  Though technically his title was Project Engineer, at that time, there was not a Project Manager overseeing him, so his responsibilities were that of a Project Manager.  He was then quickly promoted to the role of Project Executive in 1994, after just three years with the company, with complete authority over several projects at one time, including the Ohlone College Performing Arts Center in Fremont and the Red Morton Community Center in Redwood City.  During his tenure as Project Executive, he also served as the Corporate Safety Officer for several years.  After Brian's tenure, the role of Corporate Safety Officer became a full-time position.  Brian was the last person to serve in both roles concurrently at Amoroso.

He then joined the estimating department in 1996, where he developed expertise in preconstruction services, preliminary budgeting, and final pricing.  Once again, he proved his skill and dedication to the firm and was promoted to the role of Chief Estimator of our Northern California Division in 2003.

It was during his time in the NorCal Estimating Department that he was at the center of one of Amoroso's most exciting and strangest wins, on the Evergreen Valley High School Project in 2001.  The opening line of the article in the San Jose Mercury put it best: under the headline "Cut of Cards Gives Bidder $66 Million", they wrote, "The Old West, where fortunes could be made on the turn of a card, lives!".  In a one-in-a-million turn of events, Amoroso and our frequent competitor, Tilden Coil Construction, turned in identical bids—down to the dollar.  Instead of wasting time and money, the Owner turned to an obscure law still on California's books that allows a cut of cards to break the tie.  As the project's Lead Estimator, Brian cut the legendary ten, which trumped Tilden Coil's nine and gave Amoroso the $66 million contract.  From then on, Brian has been our unofficial lucky charm.

His promotion to Vice President of our Southern California Division in 2005 had nothing to do with luck.  As evidenced by his resume highlights above, Brian excelled in every role and now oversees all aspects and activities in Southern California, including estimating, operations, and managerial matters.  In 2015, Brian was promoted to President of our Southern California Division.  His diverse set of experiences in every project role in the firm, as well as in new construction, seismic rehabilitations, renovations, and developments for private entities and public agencies, gives him a unique strength in his role as President.
